The Mediaroom market, as well as the broader IPTV market, is beginning to boom; the global number of IPTV subscribers is expected to reach 72.6 million in 2010 (MRG, 11/2007). At CES 2008, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates predicted the Mediaroom platform would reach one million global subscribers in Q1 2008, as service providers are currently turning up two new Microsoft Mediaroom customer households every minute.
On the other hand, achieving the promise of Mediaroom IPTV can be a capital- and operational-intensive proposition for service providers, as IPTV requires bandwidth and quality of service (QoS) beyond those of consumer Internet offerings. In addition, all areas of a carriers operations staff - from technicians to customer service - require special skills or training to support the Mediaroom platform. As a result, time to initial revenue for Mediaroom services can exceed 12-18 months.
